Karl Steptoe BSc (Hons), MSc
Sport & Exercise Psychology Consultant
Advanced PGA Golf Professional

Karl qualified as a PGA Golf Professional in 1997 and was awarded Advanced Professional status in 2010. He has worked with golfers of all abilities, developing innovative programmes to achieve their unique and specific goals and now applies his psychological understanding of successful performance to work with athletes, teams, coaches, parents and organisations from all sports, to develop a mind to perform.

As a golf Professional, Karl experienced and witnessed both the strength and weaknesses of the human mind in the competitive arena and on the practice ground. His initial frustrations at his inability to cope with pressures of the game, developed into fascination as to how some athletes faced these challenges with comparative ease. As an instructor, Karl felt largely unfulfilled; constantly aware that the information that he was relaying to clients, whilst technically sound, served only to create discomfort and often confusion, with a continuing need for information.

Through psychology, Karl began to find answers to many questions and a chance meeting, with Sir John Whitmore lead to California and training with the founder of the Inner Game, Tim Gallwey. Karl's interest in human potential and all aspects of positive psychology, was indulged by the thirty years of research and experience of these pioneers and has led to continued exploration of the constructs underlying performance excellence.

In receiving a First Class Honours Degree in Psychology Karl was awarded The British Psychological Society Award for Overall Student and the University of Greenwich Merit Award for Outstanding Contribution. These achievements enabled him to study for a Masters degree at Loughborough University in the Psychology of Sport and Exercise for which he gained a distinction.

During his time at Loughborough Karl was involved in research commissioned by the Golf Foundation to explore the development of pro social behaviour through sport ,as well as continuing his fascination with factors influencing performance breakdown under pressure, which he continues to research for his PhD. Karl's experiences are not lessons to be taught to you; but acquired tools which will enable you to discover how to overcome challenges and realise your potential.
